Schlage Recognition Systems Provides Biometric Solutions for Lebanese Government

Schlage Recognition Systems Provides Biometric Solutions for Lebanese Government

(CAMPBELL, CA) -- (July 26, 2001) – Schlage Recognition Systems, a pioneer of biometric technology, is expanding its presence in the Middle East through a project with the Lebanese government.

The Lebanese presidential palace and the education, justice and information ministries are using Schlage Recognition Systems' biometric HandReaders to provide access and track employee time and attendance. More than 7,000 employees use the 60 HandReaders on a daily basis, so the government knows who is in the building at any given time.

Schlage Recognition Systems' HandReaders turn the hand into an identification card, measuring finger length, width, thickness and surface area. This information is then compared to data stored on an employee’s ID card or in the system’s memory. Schlage Recognition Systems has more than 50,000 HandReaders installed worldwide, with about 700 units in the Middle East.

According to Martin Huddart, Schlage Recognition Systems' general manager, “The Middle East is a fast-growing marketplace for security and safety solutions, so governments and corporations in this part of the world are turning to Schlage Recognition Systems' products to enhance security and monitor employee attendance. Our biometric technology delivers an effective solution to their safety and human-resource issues.”

Scott Grabowski, Schlage Recognition Systems' sales director, adds, “We see the Middle East as a major growth opportunity for the next few years.“ Grabowski expects Schlage Recognition Systems to sell about 1,000 HandReaders in the Middle East this year.

The rising demand for Schlage Recognition Systems' products is indicative of the overall market for biometric access control technologies. The International Biometric Industry Association (IBIA) estimates that sales of biometric hardware will increase from $100 million in 2001 to more than $500 million by 2003. The IBIA cites the Middle East as a market with significant growth potential.
