Case Study #13 - Wen Extended Care

"Our employees feel a lot more comfortable with the HandReader than they would with any kind of fingerprinting system."

"Our employees feel a lot more comfortable with the HandReader than they would with any kind of fingerprinting system."

What do you do when you want to make sure that vital health-care professionals are at work when you need them to be? Easy. Get the HandReader.

Wen Extended Care Facilities Management Corp. runs nursing homes in the New York City area. The company has 1,300 employees, which means a lot of health-care workers coming and going and a real need for an effective tracking system that offers complete accuracy. So the company invested in the field-proven technology of the HandReader. "The HandReaders work well for us," says company Controller Joseph Malone. "We've had no false accepts and that's great. Employees need to get in and out quickly or they lose confidence in the system."

"We like the HandReader because it's easy for our employees, who speak many different languages. All our employees use it, even the supervisors."

In a nursing home, where so many people are in need of daily attention, it's important to make sure that the employees are showing up on time and staying through the end of their shifts. To make sure its employees were on-site when they were scheduled to be, Wen Extended Care invested in the HandReader, a highly reliable machine that verifies employees' identities in less than one second, based on the unique size and shape of their hands. Automated Time Concepts installed the first machines at Wen Extended Care in July, 1998 and today they have a total of fourteen HandReaders installed in three locations. "We liked the HandReader a lot when we first saw it," says company Controller Joseph Malone. "It doesn't take a fingerprint, which would have been very unpopular and caused the union to flip out. We also like it because it's easy for our employees, who speak many different languages. All our employees use it, even the supervisors. When we had cards and badges, people were always losing them or saying they'd lost them." Having the HandReader's automated records also ensures that any required reporting to government agencies will be absolutely accurate, and Malone says the company also likes the fact that all of the HandReaders at one site can be hooked up with a single modem, a cost-saving feature. "This system provides exactly what we're looking for," says Malone.
